Tactical Combat Engine: 3-AP Economy & Overwatch

Turn-Based Battle Mechanics

3-Action Point (AP) Economy

Core Turn Engine

Unlike 2-action tactical games, Star Wars Zero Company provides 3 AP per turn. Move (1 AP), standard fire (1 AP), heavy burst (2 AP), and reload (1 AP) can be chained freely.

Tactical Pro-Tip: A classic high-efficiency turn: Move into cover (1 AP) → Fire primary weapon (1 AP) → Set an Overwatch reaction cone (1 AP).

Adjustable Overwatch Cones

Zone Defense

Overwatch is not a blind circle. You physically aim and resize an Overwatch firing arc. Narrow cones grant +25% hit/crit rate on chokepoints; wide cones cover flanking lanes.

Tactical Pro-Tip: Narrow your cone over doorways and ladders for guaranteed reaction interrupts. Use wide cones in open courtyards to deter flanking.

Advantage Resource Pool

Momentum System

Advantage is a shared squad meter generated by executing flanks, shooting from elevated perches, and securing multi-kills. Spent to cast signature abilities without consuming base AP.

Tactical Pro-Tip: Use fast operators (Scouts / Gunslingers) to farm Advantage early in the turn, then spend it on devastating AoE strikes from Heavies.

Vulnerable Status & Focus Fire

Synergy Multiplier

Certain Scoundrel and Leader skills inflict 'Vulnerable'. All follow-up squad attacks against a Vulnerable target deal guaranteed critical hits and bypass standard armor.

Tactical Pro-Tip: Always order your Scoundrel or Hawks to tag elite enemies and boss units first, then follow up with Longarm Snipers for massive burst damage.

Cycle 3 Respec & Class Re-allocation Terminal

Cycle 3 (Post-Prologue at The Den)

Located in the Armory — Specialization Reconfiguration Terminal. Do not worry about starter character choices during prologue — class trees can be completely retrained once The Den becomes operational.

  • Starting classes chosen during character creation are NOT locked permanently.
  • Full skill point and specialization reset is free and unrestricted once The Den is operational at Cycle 3.
  • Secondary Specializations unlock naturally as the campaign progresses, enabling hybrid dual-class synergy builds.
  • Experiment freely with different class combinations to tailor your squad against specific planetary enemy factions.

Official Named-Operator Builds

Publisher Verified

Hawks

Official
MedicScoutSharpshooter

Unique Talent — Fearless Leader

Key Abilities

  • First Responder — Medpac usable twice per battle
  • Assess Threats (Scout sightline scans)
  • Lethal stacks (+hit / +crit while stacked, Sharpshooter)

Strategy

Epic's official line: build Hawks to cover whichever role the named cast is missing. The Medic path (Fearless Leader keeps the squad alive through permadeath-heavy fights) is the recommended starter, with Scout or Sharpshooter as the second Specialization once it unlocks.

Trick (CT-3301)

Official

Available from the early campaign (pre-order license drop)

Soldier → Heavy

Unique Talent — For My Brothers

Survives being downed once per battle — effectively a free life.

Key Abilities

  • Rocket Strike — deletes clusters of enemies and their cover
  • Taunt / Bulwark (Heavy tree)
  • Unstoppable — attacks back when hit and taunts attackers, locking the line

Strategy

The reliable mid-game anchor: start as Soldier for +2 Blaster / +2 Grenade damage, then double into Heavy for +2 Defense and +4 Max Health. With For My Brothers as a safety net, Trick is the squad's best living shield on Extreme missions.

Kabb Uppercut

Official

Early campaign companion

Heavy + Soldier

Unique Talent — Uppercut

Kills refund all of Kabb's Action Points.

Key Abilities

  • Scoundrel-style close combat
  • Prizefighter melee pressure

Strategy

Uppercut refunding full AP on kills turns Kabb into a snowball engine: stun or finish a weak droid, then keep acting. Epic recommends stacking Heavy and Soldier so the refunded turns land with boosted damage and survivability.

Jae Mordant

Official

Cycle 3 — 'In Debt to the Hutts' (story mission)

Assault → Gunslinger

Unique Talent — Final Shot

Sweeping Salvo generates 4 Advantage on use.

Key Abilities

  • Fleet of Foot — +1.0m first movement
  • Strike the Flanks — +20% critical chance
  • Keen Eye — +6% ranged critical chance
  • Sweeping Salvo (Assault multi-target)

Strategy

Assault's mobility plus Gunslinger's crit economy makes Jae the named cast's premium finisher. Epic's guide: use Sweeping Salvo to bank 4 Advantage, then spend it on boosted follow-up shots the same turn.

Tel-Rea Vokoss

Official

Cycle 7 — 'Dark Waters' (story mission)

Jedi Padawan → Wayseeker

Unique Talent — Strong With the Force

Access to Force Push / Pull and (later) Lightsaber Throw.

Key Abilities

  • Force Push / Pull — Fast Actions that reposition enemies at range
  • Lightsaber Throw — high single-target damage (late game)
  • Dual lightsaber melee with strong crit profile

Strategy

The squad's Force user fits almost any mission: yank enemies out of cover, push them into each other or off ledges (bypasses hit chance), then clean up with the Scout/Sharpshooter duo. Epic pairs the Padawan path with the Wayseeker second Specialization for mid-story power.

Cly Kullervo

Official

Cycle 13 — recruit at The Den (Mandalorian)

Warrior → Scout

Unique Talent — Combat Jump (Jetpack)

Jetpack mobility — drop into a pack, mark, then extract.

Key Abilities

  • Electroweb Dart — tags enemies (2x cost, refunded to 1x with Advantage)
  • Electroweb Surge — detonates tags for AoE damage that ignores Defense
  • Combat Recon (Scout) — generates large Advantage pools per turn

Strategy

Cly's signature combo: tag a clustered group with Electroweb Dart, detonate with Surge for Defense-ignoring area damage — the cost is paid in Advantage, not AP, so she can still move and shoot. Scout's Combat Recon feeds the loop; TheGamer calls it the best crowd-kill in the game.

Luco Bronc

Official

Casualties of War — 3-mission companion arc

Sharpshooter → Scoundrel

Key Abilities

  • Zero-In (Sharpshooter precision)
  • Pick Them Off (Scoundrel execution)
  • Combat Gas / Instinct / Never Play Fair (Scoundrel utility)

Strategy

Epic's build: keep Luco on Sharpshooter's long-range precision, then layer Scoundrel for execution and battlefield tricks. The pairings cover two ranges so Luco can secure kills the frontline leaves wounded.

Community Theorycraft Synergies

Theorycraft

Quick Draw Engine

Theorycraft
Gunslinger (Quick Draw)ScoutSharpshooter

Synergy Engine

Feed kills to the Gunslinger to refund AP while the Scout sets up sightlines and the Sharpshooter handles the long-range criticals.

Why it works

IGN confirms Quick Draw refunds AP on kills with multi-shot pistols. Building the squad around AP recycling keeps the turn economy on your side — useful for clearing battle droids cheaply to farm Advantage.

Overwatch Wall

Theorycraft
HeavySoldierAssault

Synergy Engine

End every turn with 1 AP held for Overwatch cones, turning your frontline into a wall that punishes enemy movement.

Why it works

Overwatch triggers on enemy movement and can interrupt it (IGN). A wall of Overwatch cones is a low-risk, high-reward default posture.

Backup Focus-Fire

Theorycraft
Any high-damage OperatorGunslinger or Sharpshooter as backup target

Synergy Engine

Each turn a random squad member names a Backup partner who fires at the same target. Shoot first with the primary, then let Backup confirm the kill.

Why it works

Backup is a free second shot (range/LOS permitting). Positioning everyone to share sightlines converts it into guaranteed focus-fire kills.

Force Reposition

Theorycraft
Jedi Padawan (Tel-Rea Vokoss)ScoutSharpshooter

Synergy Engine

Use Force Push/Pull to break enemy cover and stack bodies, while the Scout and Sharpshooter clean up from elevation.

Why it works

Force Push/Pull confirmed by the 'Forceful' achievement — knocking enemies into each other or off ledges bypasses hit chance entirely ('Watch That First Step').

Guiding Theorycraft Principles

  1. 01Hold 1 AP for Overwatch instead of gambling a low-percentage shot.
  2. 02Kill cheap battle droids with pistol chains to farm Advantage.
  3. 03Pair Operators for Bonds — synergy pairings also unlock Very High Bond achievements.
  4. 04Spread Operators across two Specializations once the second unlocks for flexibility.
  5. 05Upgrade weapon families (Longarm / Pistol / Repeater / Rifle) at The Den to keep damage scaling.
  6. 06Don't take wounded squads into 'Extreme' missions — injuries compound into permadeath.

Official builds are quoted from the Epic Games Store guide (2026-08-28) and TheGamer's Best Operators analysis — publisher and editorial confirmed, not our numbers. Theorycrafts evolve as the community maps the Focus Tree, second Specialization unlocks and ability values. Anything we haven't verified is labeled — corrections are welcome.

Which Class Is Best?

Which class is best in Zero Company?

There is no single best class — the publisher's own guide builds each named Operator around their unique talent. For a first playthrough, Hawks as a Medic covers the most team needs, while Trick's Rocket Strike and Kabb's heavy loadout carry damage.

What is the best class for Hawks?

The official guide recommends Medic as Hawks' starter Specialization — Fearless Leader keeps the squad alive through permadeath-heavy fights — then Scout or Sharpshooter as the second unlock.

What is the best weapon class?

Weapons trade damage for action-point economy: low-AP pistols pair with Quick Draw builds, rifles shine at mid range on Sharpshooters, and heavy weapons need Kabb-style tanks to stay planted.

What are Specializations?

Each Operator has a primary and a second Specialization unlocked later in the campaign (Medic, Scout, Sharpshooter, and so on). They determine the Focus Tree and which unique talents are reachable.
